The CPS Mentorship Initiative launched The Power of Sound Music Awareness and Mentor Advocacy Program giving nine high school students an opportunity to gain hands on experience in the music business through a series of workshops. Participants gain in-depth experience at a recording studio where they work on all facets of completing a recording project, production and record promotion/project management. The program will go from May 21st – July 9th every Saturday from 10a.m.-12:30p.m. at Soundscape Studios 2510 W. Chicago Ave.

Jerome Kemp, Record Promotion/Project Manager says working with The Power of Sound Workshop has been a tremendous experience. “The most rewarding part is teaching and mentoring, while also having the opportunity to bond and laugh with the youth. The development and growth of these young men and women, as it relates to music, in such a short span of time has been incredible,” Kemp states.

Four students who are rappers, singers and spoken word artists will work with recording artist Mikkey Halsted to produce three songs. Two students will work with producer Xcell in the production workshop to produce three industry standard music tracks that will be used in the documentary. Two students will work with recording engineer Keyzz to oversee the recording process. Record Promotion/Project Management Jerome Kemp works with one student to do radio promotion and project management. The final recordings that will be featured as part of the MAP Program documentary.

Corey Freeman, student in the program says this is the best workshop he has ever done and wants to learn everything he can about the music business. About CPS Mentorship Initiative
The Board has conducted a comprehensive assessment of the violence related risks posed to CPS high school students both inside and outside of school. In response to extensive data based research and community discussions, the Board has created a mentorship strategy to advance the protection, safety, and security of high school students. Community based organizations will supply mentors and services for student participants, who are the most at risk of becoming victims of violence. Equally important to the success of this ambitious program will be individualized service plans, student accountability and support from school leaders.
