Jerome Kemp, Record Promotion/Project Manager says working with The Power of Sound Workshop has been a tremendous experience. “The most rewarding part is teaching and mentoring, while also having the opportunity to bond and laugh with the youth. The development and growth of these young men and women, as it relates to music, in such a short span of time has been incredible,” Kemp states.
The student participants have been identified through a statistical analysis that looked at several risk factors such as truancy, in-school suspensions, academic performance, community poverty level, juvenile corrections experience and discipline event related to gang activity. Four students who are rappers, singers and spoken word artists will work with recording artist Mikkey Halsted to produce three songs. Two students will work with producer Xcell in the production workshop to produce three industry standard music tracks that will be used in the documentary. Two students will work with recording engineer Keyzz to oversee the recording process. Record Promotion/Project Management Jerome Kemp works with one student to do radio promotion and project management. The final recordings that will be featured as part of the MAP Program documentary.
Corey Freeman, student in the program says this is the best workshop he has ever done and wants to learn everything he can about the music business. "When I see somebody like Xcell helping me become a better producer,” says Freeman. “It makes me feel like I can come to him and how I can be connected with and understand what it is to make the best songs out there."
About CPS Mentorship Initiative
The Board has conducted a comprehensive assessment of the violence related risks posed to CPS high school students both inside and outside of school. In response to extensive data based research and community discussions, the Board has created a mentorship strategy to advance the protection, safety, and security of high school students. Community based organizations will supply mentors and services for student participants, who are the most at risk of becoming victims of violence. Equally important to the success of this ambitious program will be individualized service plans, student accountability and support from school leaders.
