March 11, 2014, New York, NY: Katrina Leskanich kicks off her North American tour next week in support of her latest solo album entitled Blisland (Listen to Blisland streaming via Popmatters.) The album is her first collection of new songs in 10 years and this will be the first time Karina tours N. America as a solo artist in over 25 years. The tour follows Katrina's summer stint on the Retro Futura Tour where she showcased tunes from Blisland as well as material from her stint as frontwoman of Katrina and the Waves. The trek begins March 17th on Long Island at Page One in Glen Cove.
Katrina's new backing band consists of two former Blackhearts, Sean Koos and Jimi Bones and her drummer Kevin Tooley has played with John Cale, Lou Reed, Midge Ure and Eric Burdon which all bring a rock edge to Katrina's classic 80's vibe.
An ex-pat living in London, Katrina has enjoyed notable success in the UK and Europe in the '90's, first with her former band, winning the renowned European TV show Eurovision by the largest margin ever with the song 'Love Shine a Light.' The win was followed by an unprecedented four consecutive appearances on Top Of The Pops and a No. 3 in the UK Charts. After Katrina and the Waves broke up, Katrina switched gears and did stints as a Television and then Radio Presenter with the BBC. Katrina geared back up as a solo artist in the '00's, releasing her first solo album in 2005, relentlessly touring in 2006 and scoring a UK Club Hit in 2008 with a cover of 'They Don't Know.'
In 2010 Katrina celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the global hit single, ‘Walking on Sunshine’ with the release of a new CD, ‘THE LIVE ALBUM’ and the Glee Cast had a UK Top 10 hit with a mash up of Beyonce’s ‘Halo’ and Katrina & The Waves ‘Walking on Sunshine’. The song has become a staple of the pop culture landscape appearing in numerous films, TV shows and ads including: Secret of My Success (1987), Look Who’s Talking (1989), High Fidelity, (2000), American Psycho (2000), Daddy Day Care (2003), and Walking on Sunshine in 2014 starring Leona Lewis. 'Walking On Sunshine celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2015. In addition to 'Walking on Sunshine', some of Katrina's other songs have enjoyed the spotlight with covers by a diverse group of artists including The Bangles, Dolly Parton and Celine Dion.
In addition to reintroducing herself to US audiences, Katrina has released the first on what she hopes to be a series of travel guides starring her toy poodle, Peggy Lee. The first book, a guide to Katrina's current home base of London is available on tour and online:
