The 53rd Chicago International Film Festival Poster Revealed
October 1-26, 2017 | Chicago

In August, Cinema/Chicago held a Sneak Peek Party at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers to announce the first 25 films to be shown at the 53rd Chicago International Film Festival and revealed the winning poster design for this year's Festival.

A design by Dutch-born artist Edwin Smeenge of Germany was chosen out of 172 entries from 30 countries. "Edwin's image of a curious face looking out from the dark is perfect," remarked Michael Kutza, founder & CEO of the Chicago International Film Festival. "It precisely captures the sense of curiosity, adventure and discovery that our audiences bring to the Festival."

The roster of films announced by newly appointed Artistic Director Mimi Plauché is replete with an array of electrifying and entertaining films, including awards-season contenders, indie treasures and discoveries from a range of countries.

MARSHALL

DIRECTOR: REGINALD HUDLIN U.S.

Starring Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown, and James Cromwell, Marshall is based on a true incident in the life of Thurgood Marshall when he was a young lawyer, long before his appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. As the nation teeters on the brink of WWII, a nearly bankrupt NAACP sends Marshall to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur against his wealthy socialite employer in a sexual assault and attempted murder trial that quickly became tabloid fodder. In need of a high-profile victory but muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall is partnered with Samuel Friedman, a young Jewish lawyer who has never tried a case. Marshall and Friedman struggle against a hostile storm of fear and prejudice, driven to discover the truth in the sensationalized trial that helped set the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement to come.

Scheduled to attend: Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Reginald Hudlin and producer Paula Wagner
