Chicago Critical Mass Bike Ride Hits the Streets of Chicago Again.

Chicago Critical Mass bike rides start from Daley Plaza, Dearborn & Washington at 5:30 pm on the last Friday of each month, regardless of season or weather. They are free and fun. All you have to do is show up with your bike.

Here is a link to see my report

What is Critical Mass?

Critical Mass is a bike ride plain and simple. The ride takes place on the Last Friday Of Every Month (in Chicago anyway). A Critical Mass is created when the group of riders comes together for those few hours to take back the streets of our city. The right of the people to assemble is guaranteed in the Constitution, and Critical Mass helps people remember that right. The Mass itself has no political agenda, though, no more than the people of any other community do. Critical Mass is open to all, and it welcomes all riders to join in a celebration of riding bicycles. Why? Because bikes are fun!

Sure, as with any community, you'll see people of all types. Some people see Critical Mass as a forum for grassroots political change. Some people see it as a protest against cars. Some people just like to ride. The Mass, however, is just that...a bunch of bike riders. You can drive a car the whole month and ride in the Mass. You can be an anarchist and ride in the Mass. The point of the Mass is the Mass, nothing more. Critical Mass has no leadership. It is a ride where no one is in charge. At any time, riders are free to leave, stay, stop, or even help out. Everyone is responsible for themselves and the Mass. Learn how to get involved!

Once you realize that, you're free to enjoy the exhilaration that is a large bike ride. It's quite a sight to be parading down Michigan Avenue with thousands of fellow riders, wishing pedestrians and drivers a "Happy Friday!"

One on One with Jennifer Williams (Basketball Wives)

Interview conducted at the Glam Luxe Boutique – Chicago, IL, USA – August 6, 2011
by Tamara Jenkins

VH1's reality series Basketball Wives has sparked high ratings and high criticism. Focusing on the lives of the women behind some of the worlds most admired and idolized men, the show has become a goldmine for the cable channel and made the wives featured household names.

Having just concluded the third season that included physical altercations, verbal attacks and international travel, one of its stars, Jennifer Williams, is ready to step away from the shadow of her soon to be former husband and the life as a basketball wife and move into a new, independent chapter.

Recently in Chicago for a meet and greet at the Glam Luxe Boutique, for which she serves as the company's spokes model, Williams spoke to UnRated Urban about the show, her projects away from the show and her future goals.

How did you get involved with the show
JW: Shaunie O'Neal, one of the show's executive producers, had this idea to do the show, talked to Evelyn about it, then we all got on the phone and that's how it came about. It's not like we were cast to do the show. We all had a connection to Shaunie and it took on a life of its own.
Are you surprised by the success of the show
JW: At first I was, probably like season one, because I was like wow people are really interested in our lives. But after season one I sort of got use to it. But everyday something does kind of surprise me. It really surprises me how interested people are and how invested they are in our lives. I think everything has its pros and cons and it's a good thing but sometimes it can be a little overwhelming.
How do you feel about the negative criticism the show has received

Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival 2011 the alternative to Lollapalooza. Metal Lives in Chicago

Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival 2011 for metal fans is the closest that we can get to a Festival to the likes of Lollapalooza in Chicago. A few month back Disturbed headlined to over over 35,000 fans at Rock on the Range, and in 2010 Godsmack did the same.  This year in 2011 on August 5th, in competition to Chicago's Lollapalooza festival, metal fans came out and packed First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre. You may ask what makes the difference between the metal and Lolla fan? Metal fans are loyalist, an army who throw their fist in the air, fans from all walks of life, who pick up someone up when they are falling, and who don’t change their flavor for music from day to day. Metal is a community, everything else  can be cast to the likes of Lollapalooza, where it’s only in the “IN” the music for now, and then artist dies tomorrow. The metal bands we see and feel at Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival will last and stand time. That is what metal is, a family or rock metal heads, who love the music, who buy the CDs, who go to concerts, which rarely get air play. Unfortunately all you will hear in this weekend news is Lollapalooza in Chicago. It's sad to have such a disconnect.  Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival 2011 in Chicago is the news for every heavy metal fan.  To see the best metal bands of today ... Megadeth, Machine Head, Godsmack and Disturbed.

We must search out what we want because mainstream stations and magazines will rarely, if ever, give bands such as Megadeth, Disturbed, Godsmack or Machine Head any press. As a music journalist for more than 15 years, I have seen the concert venues packed, many times sold out for metal and rock, however all the MTV stuff, well let’s say this, how many free tickets can you given away to get people in the door. Metal music and rock has always filled the venues and stadiums, mostly by of word of mouth, fan clubs and artists websites, metal don’t need mainstream media outlets, just like mainstream only exploits metal when the mighty dollar can be further made. Plus from a cost savings, less for expensive marketing campaigns.  Iron Maiden can sell out huge venues with out one ad in print or radio. That is a savings of millions, in return bringing the ticket cost less to you.

Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival brings this year the following headliners, Machine Head, Megadeth, Godsmack and Chicago south siders Disturbed. Machine Head enticed the fans “the metal family” to hard metal music, a chance unleash and disappear for few hours into world that is theirs. Dave Mustaine, to many the spokesman of thrash went into monologue, “What do you think of our Government,” continuing, “When 2012 comes don’t get caught sleeping.” Sully Erna of Godsmack energized the fans and told them to bring the song from your inside out, and further encouraged the mosh from the far ends of the stage,as one whole venue mosh, and our man, David Draiman, who has become a preacher of metal, always brings out the best in every metal fan, and more felt because this is his home town, as Draimen ends, “We are Disturbed!”

Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem was a need in Chicago to give something more to these fans than just Lollapalooza which for most part alienates metal. Metal is in our blood.
