Prior to the show and at an upscale restaurant across the street from the venue, I sat down with Gemini Syndrome, lead vocalist, Aaron Nordstrom and asked him what I should expect from him and his band's performance set to take place in just a couple of short hours. Aaron, who has an extreme presence about him, including very tall stature, long bleach blonde hair and beard, facial piercings, and a sort of stare that could burn straight through your soul, sipped his vodka/Sprite® and in a very soft-spoken voice, he said simply, "PURE ENERGY." Nice! A Chicagoland native now living the warm life in Los Angeles, we had the chance to speak for about a half hour. He told me about life in L.A. and his past experience as the guitarist for Otep. He told me that it was Otep that provided him with the experience of being a professional, yet it is Gemini Syndrome that presented him with the opportunity of being a front man. He was guinely enthusiastic when he spoke about how much he appreciated the role and everything that comes along with it, saying sincerely, "I really like touring. I like meeting with the media and doing interviews. That's what being a front man is all about....being the face and the voice of the band. I especially like talking to the fans and meeting them at the merchandise area after shows. There can never be too many opportunities to meet people and I never get sick of it. " All around nice guy? YES, indeed.
After heading into the venue and checking out the first band, Emphatic, it was now time for Gemini Syndrome to begin their set. It was then, and in standard rock concert fashion, the lights went dark and the stage was barely lit. Then, out of nowhere, BAM! Loud as hell, yet clear as a bell, I feel the bass in my chest as I witness this shy dude claim a Jesus-like stance and basically command ownership over the attention of people who came to see them with his vocal energy. Pure energy? Um....YES please. The song I was witnessing first was the band's title song of their Warner Brother's debut album, "Lux." There were nine more songs to follow and this band never lost momentum.
I would venture to say that it is clear that Gemini Syndrome is influenced by bands such as Tool, A Perfect Circle, and maybe a little Sevendust thrown in there however, Aaron has quite a unique quality to his vocals and should not mistaken for anyone but his own. In addition, the band is tight and most certainly explosive as to their energy level and ability to rile their audience. And the best part is that, unlike their influences, they are relatively new to the scene and can only continue to amaze in their long future.
This current tour will end at the end of February 2014, but I am positive you can count on another tour in the coming months. If and when you do, make sure to try and make it out to see them. You won't be disappointed.
